Commanding less than 200 Texian defenders of the Alamo vs. thousands of enemies, Lt. Col. William B. Travis knew he could not win.  Still, he answered the first enemy demand for his army’s surrender with a cannon shot.  The final surrender demand inspired him to write the now famous “Victory or Death”.   This bravery inspired the battle cry "Remember the Alamo!" that would echo across the battlefield where Texas independence was finally won.
